Terms of Service

Shiritai is a free study tool that adds furigana readings to Japanese text and explains text you select with translation, grammar, vocabulary, kanji, and JLPT notes. You can use much of it without an account. If you do not agree with these terms, please do not use Shiritai.

An account is optional but unlocks a higher daily limit. If you create one, provide accurate information, keep your password secure, and take responsibility for activity under your account. Shiritai is not intended for children under 13 (or under 16 where required by local law).

You keep ownership of the Japanese text you submit. To provide the service, you give Shiritai permission to process that text — including sending it to our AI provider to generate your explanation. Please do not submit sensitive, confidential, or personal information. How we handle your data is described in our Privacy Policy.

Explanations are generated by AI and are probabilistic. They may contain errors or oversimplifications. Shiritai is a study aid, not a substitute for professional instruction, certified translation, or authoritative grammar reference. Always verify anything important with qualified sources.

You agree not to:

• Use Shiritai for any unlawful, harmful, or infringing purpose.
• Attempt to overwhelm, reverse-engineer, scrape, or bypass the service’s rate limits and fair-use controls.
• Automate requests beyond what the service allows, or resell access without permission.
• Submit content that violates the rights of others.

The Shiritai extension modifies the pages you view solely to add furigana and to offer the “Explain with Shiritai” action. It runs in your browser, and you install and remove it at your discretion. Furigana is generated locally; explaining a selection sends that text to shiritai.app as described in the Privacy Policy.

The Shiritai name, logo, software, and website are owned by Shiritai. You may use the AI explanations you receive for your own personal study. Nothing in these terms gives you rights to our brand or underlying service beyond the limited right to use Shiritai as offered.

Shiritai is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee that explanations are accurate, complete, or uninterrupted. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Shiritai is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service.

We may update or change Shiritai and these terms at any time; material term changes will be reflected in the “Last updated” date. We may suspend or restrict access to protect the service or other users. You can stop using Shiritai or delete your account at any time.
